Two Thorne electrolytes, two different jobs
Thorne makes two electrolyte drink mixes, and they are built for different days. Daily Electrolytes is a zero-sugar stick pack meant for everyday hydration, travel and ordinary training. Advanced Electrolytes is a higher-dose tub formula with fast carbohydrate, made for long or hard sessions.
Most people only need one of them most of the time. The deciding questions are how long you train, how hot it is, how salty you sweat, and whether you also need carbohydrate during the session.

Why the sodium number is the one to watch
Sweat is mostly water and sodium. A 2019 analysis of athlete sweat testing (Barnes and colleagues, Journal of Sports Sciences) put the average at about 0.8 grams of sodium per liter of sweat, with individuals ranging from roughly a quarter of a gram to 2 grams. Potassium losses are far smaller, a few hundred milligrams per liter at most. That is why every serious electrolyte product leads with sodium and keeps potassium modest, and why a potassium-heavy “hydration” drink is not replacing what you actually lost.
Put in practical terms: one Daily Electrolytes stick carries about as much sodium as an average person loses in half a liter to a liter of sweat. A heavy, salty sweater training for an hour in July can lose several times that. If your shirt dries with white salt lines, or you get crampy late in long sessions, you are probably in the salty group and the higher-dose Advanced formula makes more sense on those days.
Which one to use, and when
| Situation | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under an hour, cool conditions | Water is usually enough | Food covers what you lose |
| Daily hydration, travel, long workdays, flights | Daily Electrolytes | Zero sugar, stick pack fits a bag |
| Training in heat, or 60 to 90 minutes of hard work | Daily Electrolytes, or Advanced for salty sweaters | More sodium without a sugar load you do not need |
| Long or double sessions, Hyrox, tournaments, endurance events | Advanced Electrolytes | Higher sodium plus 15 g fast carbohydrate |
| Youth tournament days | Daily Electrolytes between games | Easy to dose, no sugar crash, NSF certified |
Thorne labels Advanced Electrolytes for use 30 to 90 minutes before or after a workout. The 15 grams of carbohydrate is modest compared with the 30 to 60 grams per hour commonly recommended for long endurance efforts, so on race day it works as part of your fueling, not all of it.
One safety note that surprises people: in long events, drinking large amounts of plain water can dilute blood sodium to a dangerous level. Matching fluid to thirst and including sodium on long days is the simple defense.
