Scheduling Questions? How the Summer Program Works:
Most of us at APEX PWR played 2 or 3 sports our entire high school career. We know the summer is jam packed with camps, clinics, tournaments, showcases and hopefully, there’s some family vacation time as well. This summer, we’ve created the ultimate flexible schedule that you can pick and choose which session you attend each week. Additionally, there are makeup workouts every Friday, allowing athletes the opportunity to makeup for missed workouts during that week or previous weeks.

What is APEX Athlete Development?
Â
This summer program is for all committed athletes, ages 8 years old and up. For the FIRST TIME this summer, we’re splitting the program into two age groups, 8-13 years old and 14 – 18 years old. We’re here to help athletes improve performance and continue to develop their foundation of athleticism in all sports. Most sports have plenty of time spent in both practice and games where athletes will work on explosiveness, reactive strength and speed (all good things). However, that practice time neglects building foundational strength and, most importantly, workload capacity. Looking at the performance model, if you take away the bases of foundational strength and workload capacity, an athlete’s pyramid of performance is much smaller, creating a higher risk for injury and limiting top end performance potential. At APEX PWR, we’re all about simulating the collegiate & professional weight room experience with high level performance training programs every athlete will need to do in college and beyond.

Who this is for
Athletes ages 8 years old and up that are looking to increase speed, strength, agility, power & vertical jump. All sports place demand on the body. Having a good strength & conditioning program is important to offset the repetitive demands & decrease injury risk. The program progresses over the duration of the summer to help your athlete achieve their goals.
When is it?
The summer program consists of two workouts, workout A & B. Workout A is on Monday & Tuesday. Workout B is on Wednesday & Thursday. All workouts take place at 9a and 1:30p. If you miss a workout, there is a makeup session on Fridays at 9a for 14+ and 11a for 8-13yo Dr. Jon van den Boogaard, DPT, OCS, Level 2 USA T&F Coach will be running every workout. See the full schedule below.
What to expect
We’ve been helping athletes overcome injury, prevent injury and build their athleticism since 2014. Our team features residency trained doctors of physical therapy & certified strength & conditioning specialists who have experience & passion for developing athletes. You can expect a detailed program that resembles a division 1 college training experience led by the best in the Portland, OR metro area

What Does our
Summer Athlete Performance Program Focus On?
- Injury Prevention – We’ve been treating physical therapy patients since 2014, from middle school to professional athletes. We’ve implemented all the latest research into this program to help people decrease their injury risk as much as possible, including common injuries like ACL tears, ankle sprains, hamstring pulls, shoulder injuries and more.
Strength –Â One of the best ways to decrease injury risk, is through strength training. Strength is a building block for athletes in any sport, any age. Our programs will help your athlete, safely and effectively, build muscle to help them be stronger throughout their sport. We do this through bodyweight movement, weights, medicine balls and resistance bands, ensuring proper technique before making things more difficult.
- Mobility / Stability – Some athletes need to increase flexibility, range of motion and mobility. This will allow for speed, strength and explosiveness increases. Other athletes need to be more stable at a moments notice. We incorporate both mobility & stability in all workouts.
- Agility – No matter the sport, dedicating training to fast-twitch muscle fibers will help athletes develop all around athleticism and blow by their competition.
- Endurance – Every sport requires endurance so that the athlete can continue to push when energy is low. We will develop both cardiovascular and muscular endurance during this program so your athlete can stand out all game long.
- Explosiveness – Adding explosive training principles allows an athlete to improve relative strength and create more force, resulting in improvements in things like, vertical jump, broad jump & top end performance.
- Body Control – Athletes are growing and always a work in progress. This program is dedicated to helping your athlete improve their ability to control their body through space, especially when fatigued.Â

Which is More Important, Strength or Speed?
Different sports place a different demand on each athlete. Many athletes spend their time working on speed or speed-strength, while others focus solely on strength or strength-speed. Some of this comes naturally with the sport, practice time and games or competitions. Each element of the Force Velocity Curve is important and it is most ideal for an athlete to increase the entire curve outward. This compliments the Performance Model pyramid shown above and creates a well-rounded athlete. Our athlete development approach emphasizes all parts of the Force Velocity Curve through a variety of exercises and movements involving bodyweight, resistance bands, weights and medicine balls. We utilize all areas of our facility, that has 2000 sqft of turf, weight floor and 30 foot ceilings.
FAQ - Athlete Development Program:
My athlete is currently injured but would like to join this program… What can I do?
We would recommend setting up an appointment with our team of physical therapists. Each summer program workout for both age groups is ran by a doctor of physical therapy. They would love to work with your injured athlete before the program so they can more easily make adjustments in the group setting. Our approach is based on getting the body back to performance shape, pain free. This is how we transition athletes back into their sport in a safe manner. Your athlete would then be introduced to the training program as soon as they are cleared by our PT.
Do I have to come at the same time each week?
No! This summer is different from the past and there is more flexibility than ever! Upon purchasing the summer athlete training program, your athlete has access to TWO workouts per week. The program is designed for them to attend Workout A on Monday OR Tuesday and Workout B on Wednesday OR Thursday. If they miss a day, or even a couple weeks, they can come 3x per week and attend the makeup workout on Fridays! Call us or fill out the form with scheduling concerns or questions.
Are there makeup workouts?
Yes! If your athlete misses a workout, they can attend the makeup workout on Fridays. This also includes if you miss a week or two for vacation, other camps/clinics, practices, tournaments, etc. Your summer program includes access to 20 workouts and you can get those in whichever way you need to with our new, flexible summer schedule. Call or fill out the form if you have additional scheduling questions or concerns and would like to chat with a member of the APEX Team.
What's the difference between your program and just working out here and there?
Our program is modeled after division 1 collegiate athlete programs and pro athlete programs with similar structure and most importantly, progression over the summer. This program is designed by and coached by doctors of physical therapy and strength and conditioning specialists to ensure your athlete has qualified and well trained eyes on them every workout. We want your athlete to be properly exposed to the basics and progressions that they can expect at a higher level. Obviously, with our younger 8-13 age group, this will be much more scaled down for their age and ability, but have a similar foundation. It will also be centered around making training fun (as opposed to feeling forced leading to burn out) & building a broad, general athletic foundation so they're ready for any sport they choose later.
This is also a PROGRAM, not just general workouts here and there. With a PROGRAM, there are progressions. We have different phases planned for your athlete that they will move thru during the summer. This ensures gains in strength, speed, jumping and more!
Will this improve my child's flexibility?
YES! The Summer Program (and all of our workout sessions all year) help increase mobility, flexibility and stability. This will be achieved through various exercises and movements from a dynamic warm up to start to an active cool down to finish. Most importantly, your youth athlete will learn what they can be doing at home to continue their improvement on the days they're not at APEX.
Will this help my young athlete jump higher?
A result of strength and conditioning, with plyometric training incorporated in, is the ability to jump higher and further. We will also be testing vertical jumping at the start and end of the program to track progress. With our programs, you can expect your child to jump higher, but training safely to improve overall athleticism as well.
Will my kid get faster from your program?
No matter the sport, training the fast twitch muscle groups will help an athlete get faster. We emphasize training both fast and slow twitch throughout every session to help improve speed, agility, strength, explosion, balance and more. We will also be testing starting acceleration and other metrics at the start and end of the program to track progress.
Will there be strength training?
A primary focus of our performance training is strength work. We begin with fundamentals and foundations of strength, and progress each athlete based on their ability. Younger athletes start with body weight and focus more on mechanics, while older athletes will progress to heavier weight to increase overall strength for their sport.
How does this help decrease injury risk?
Based on our practice of physical therapy here at APEX (that’s actually how we started our business!), we focus on core components of fundamental strength training which reduces the risk of injury by building the muscular system to better support the body. There is a massive crossover between sports performance and physical therapy training, sports performance is just the next level of the work you would do in a physical therapy session with us. Most of our patients treat their physical therapy with us as a workout, getting the best results for their effort. This also helps to reduce the risk of overtraining.
Is this program a good fit for soccer players?
Soccer athletes have one of the highest risks of ACL and knee injuries. This is THE BEST environment to help your soccer athlete decrease their injury risk, while still making improvements to their overall athletic ability.
