Feed Your Body: Why Eating More Can Actually Help You Lose Weight
Inspired by Derek Luciani with commentary from Jennie Carolan
At APEX PWR, we help clients move beyond restrictive dieting and into sustainable nutrition habits that support performance, recovery, and long-term health. One of the biggest misconceptions we see, especially among busy professionals and high-performing individuals, is the belief that less food means faster results.
But as Derek and Jennie would quickly highlight, (and Derek explained perfectly in a recent video), this is not enough food.
The Problem with Eating Too Little
Many people think cutting calories or carbs is the key to progress. A common pattern looks like this: eating 800 to 900 calories a day for a few days, feeling drained and deprived, and then overeating or “starting over” every weekend.
This is why Jennie constantly highlights to every client right at the beginning, “it’s time to ditch the all-or-nothing mentality and start-again-Monday approach”.
It is not about willpower, it is about biology. When your body doesn’t get enough fuel, protein, or nutrients, your metabolism slows down, hunger hormones spike, and cravings intensify. That is why under-eating almost always leads to the all-in, all-out cycle.
What “Eat More to Lose Weight” Really Means
When we talk about eating more, we mean fueling properly, not eating endlessly.
Here’s what happens when you move from 839 calories to a balanced 1,700-calorie* plan (*your exact calorie intake for sustainable weight loss may differ based on a variety of factors):
- Every meal includes carbs, protein, and healthy fats so your energy stays stable all day.
- You include a small dessert or treat to prevent binge cycles and improve consistency.
- You get enough protein and fiber to build lean muscle, improve metabolism, and stay full.
Your body finally gets the nutrients it needs to perform, recover, and burn energy efficiently without constant fatigue and cravings.
The Sustainable Nutrition Mindset
At APEX, we don’t believe in diets that reset every Monday. We build long-term systems that support your goals and your lifestyle. That means:
- Eating enough to perform well at work, in the gym, and at home
- Building balanced meals instead of restricting entire food groups
- Allowing flexibility (yes, even ice cream) so consistency feels achievable
When you eat more of the right foods, your metabolism thrives, your workouts improve, and your results last.
Jennie always lets clients know, “there absolutely is room for fun foods in any nutritional approach. Helping clients understand this, especially through the end of the year and holiday season, is one of my favorite things to do!”
