Celebrating Kevin Le and Batya Beard at Hyrox Hong Kong

Two athletes who train and run with the APEX community took on Hyrox Hong Kong this past weekend, and both came home with podium finishes.

Batya Beard

Hyrox Hong Kong drew more than 15,000 athletes to AsiaWorld-Expo over the weekend of May 8 through 10, 2026. To finish on the podium in either division at a race that size is a real accomplishment, and both Kevin and Batya deserve to be recognized for the work it took to get there.

This was their second Hyrox event after Hyrox Houston earlier in the year. Outside of Hyrox they both compete at the amateur level in triathlons, so most of their week-to-week training is endurance work that translates well across formats.

When asked about their preparation, Kevin and Batya were both quick to say they did very little Hyrox-specific training going into Hong Kong. Their endurance bases were already deep from years of consistent running and triathlon work, and the Hyrox stations layered on top of that conditioning. The honest version of the story is that this is what years of patient aerobic work looks like, not a special program.

What Kevin and Batya Bring to APEX: A Run Club for Every Pace

The reason this story matters to the APEX community has less to do with the race results and more to do with what Kevin and Batya have built inside the facility.

Together, they co-lead APEX Run Club. Run Club is open to anyone, regardless of pace, distance, or experience. It is not a competitive group. It is not Hyrox specific. It is a weekly chance to run with other people, share a route, and remember that running can be enjoyable on its own, separate from any training goal or upcoming race.

For a lot of APEX members, Run Club has been the entry point back into running after years of telling themselves they were not runners. That is the contribution we are most grateful for. Kevin and Batya bring a love of running into the building, and they make it accessible.

Hyrox Simulation in Portland: APEX Is Hosting Sims Throughout 2026

Separate from the racing on the Hyrox side, APEX PWR is opening up our facility on Sundays throughout 2026 to host Hyrox simulations in Portland.

For people who have been searching for where to do a Hyrox sim in Portland, here is the short answer: APEX PWR in Tigard. Below is what is included in the sim and how to get on the list for the next date.

What the APEX Sim Includes

Each sim follows the official Hyrox format: 8 kilometers of running paired with the 8 Hyrox stations in fixed order (SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls).

The eight stations happen indoors at APEX. The 8K running portion is measured around the facility. Here is what you have access to during the sim:

  • Just under 10,000 square feet of indoor hybrid athlete space
  • 40 plus yards of turf for sled push and pull, sandbag work, and burpee broad jumps
  • High ceilings (relevant for wall balls at official height)
  • Race-spec equipment: SkiErgs, rowers, sleds, kettlebells, sandbags, wall ball targets
  • Station layout that mirrors race-flow transitions
  • An 8K running portion measured around the facility

A sim run on this setup gives you the actual fatigue of running on heavy legs after a sled push, the transition timing of a real race, and an honest finish time at the end.

Why We Are Hosting These

Honestly, we are hosting these because people asked us to. Hyrox athletes who have attended sims at other gyms reached out and said the space, the equipment, and the layout at APEX would fit what they were looking for. Hosting sims is not something we were planning to make part of our regular programming, but the demand is there and we have the room on Sundays, so we are happy to open the doors.

How Often and How to Get a Slot

Simulations are scheduled on Sundays throughout 2026, with multiple dates spread across the year. Each session has a limited number of slots, mostly because Hyrox simulations are equipment-intensive and the experience falls off if too many athletes are sharing stations at once.

To get the dates as they go on the calendar, and to get first access before registration opens to the general public, join the Hyrox Interest list. Signing up takes a few seconds. You can opt out of the Hyrox list separately from anything else APEX sends, so it stays focused.

What Is a Hyrox Sim, and Why Run One?

A Hyrox simulation, or Hyrox sim as most athletes call it, is a full-course practice race that follows the official Hyrox format. Eight kilometers of running, broken into eight one-kilometer segments. Between each kilometer, you complete one of the eight Hyrox stations in fixed order: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.

A sim surfaces specific things you can use to fix your training and pacing before race day:

  • Where your pace falls off, and at which station
  • Whether your running technique holds up under cumulative fatigue
  • Which station is your weakest in race context, not in isolation
  • How your fueling and hydration strategy plays out across 60 to 90 minutes
  • An honest baseline finish time so you can set a realistic race target

A Hyrox simulation is the only training session that exposes how all of the pieces fit together. It is also the cheapest insurance against being surprised on race day.

Optional Support: Hyrox PT, Testing, and Run Coaching at APEX

A Hyrox simulation at APEX does not require any other service from us. You show up, you run the sim, you get your time, you go home. That is the whole offer.

For athletes who want to go deeper, APEX has a few separate services available. None of these are required to attend a sim. They exist for people who want them.

Hyrox Physical Therapy in Portland

Dr. Kevin Le, DPT runs Hyrox physical therapy at APEX. Sled pushes and pulls load the posterior chain. Wall balls and sandbag lunges accumulate on the knees and hips. Compromised running, the term for running on heavy legs, exposes movement compensations that may have been quiet in normal training. If you have a nagging issue, or if you want a preventive assessment before ramping volume, you can book PT directly. APEX accepts most major insurance plans.

VO2 Max and Lactate Threshold Testing

VO2 max testing gives you a direct measure of your aerobic ceiling and a clean benchmark for tracking endurance gains. Lactate threshold testing identifies the exact intensity at which your body shifts from sustainable effort into accumulating fatigue. For pacing a Hyrox race, lactate threshold is one of the most useful numbers you can have.

Run Coaching and One-Time Run Consultations

Running is the part of Hyrox that decides the race for most athletes, and it is usually the part trained least specifically. APEX offers ongoing run coaching and one-time run consultations for athletes who want a structured plan or a single session to audit technique and weekly mileage.
