Small Bites, Big Impact: The Cookie Story That Changed the Way I Track Calories
Story time from our nutritionist, Jennie Carolan.
This week, I took my family to a local bakery — a small, joyful outing filled with the smell of fresh cookies and sweet nostalgia. I bought a big, decadent cookie and, like many of us do, decided to just have a few small bites. No harm in that, right?
I sliced the cookie into tiny pieces, mentally estimating each one at around 20 to 40 calories. Throughout the next couple of days, I grabbed a piece here and there — a nibble while making lunch, another while chatting at the counter. All the while thinking, “Just a bite. No big deal.”
But yesterday, I decided to actually weigh the pieces.
Two small bites. That’s it. 40 grams.
I entered it into MyFitnessPal.
Over 200 calories.
That’s right — 5 tiny bites, 200+ calories.
Each “innocent” little bite was more like 40+ calories, not the 20 I imagined.

The Reality of Mindless Bites
This isn’t a post about guilt or restriction – and definitely not fear. It’s about awareness.
Because even when we think we’re being mindful, even when our intentions are aligned with our goals, those small bites add up faster than we realize. And when you’re trying to maintain a calorie deficit, that lack of precision can quietly sabotage your progress.
As a virtual, macro based nutrition coach serving the Portland, Oregon area & across the United States, I see this all the time with clients:
- A few spoonfuls while meal prepping
- The last bite of your kid’s sandwich
- That “just a taste” of ice cream straight from the carton
On their own? Not a big deal.
But add them up over a week? That’s easily 500 to 1,000+ unaccounted calories.
Why Precision Beats Estimation
Right now, I’m in a maintenance phase — which gives me more flexibility. But if I were in a fat-loss phase? Those five cookie bites could’ve completely wiped out my intended deficit for the day.
Here’s the thing:
Weight loss isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being precise enough to give yourself the best possible shot at success.
That’s why I always coach my clients on the power of:
- Weighing food when possible — even small amounts
- Tracking accurately — especially during deficit phases
- Staying mindful — without becoming obsessed
Awareness > Perfection
This isn’t about labeling food “good” or “bad.”
It’s not about fear-based restriction or food guilt.
It’s about awareness.
It’s about making intentional choices, understanding portion sizes, and removing the guesswork that often leads to frustration and confusion.
At APEX PWR, we believe in science-based strategies that empower — not restrict.
And yes, you can absolutely enjoy bakery cookies, date nights, and family outings — without derailing your goals.
But when you’re working hard toward a deficit or body composition target, knowledge is your best tool.
