What Is Rehab? And a Few Things It’s Not
At APEX PWR, we believe great physical therapy means educating our clients just as much as it means treating them. This week, we’re spotlighting a recent Instagram post by one of our PTs, Dr. Josh Davis, DPT, that breaks down a powerful — and sometimes misunderstood — concept: What is rehab, really?
And just as importantly: what it’s not.
This message isn’t just Josh’s personal opinion — it’s one shared across our entire physical therapy team in Tigard, Beaverton, and Portland, Oregon. Let’s break it down:
Rehab Is Strength Training
“For myself and many of my clients… rehab is strength training in the presence of an injury.”
Too often, people assume that rehab means rest, stretching, or simply avoiding movement. But Dr. Josh makes it clear:
“Don’t stop exercising.”
“With the right exercises, dosage and instruction, strength training can help you overcome pain and achieve your goals.”
At APEX PWR, we recognize that strength training is not just safe, but often necessary during rehabilitation. We don’t just help clients return to baseline — we help them come back stronger. Rehab is not about isolation or limitation, but adaptation and progression. Whether you’re dealing with knee pain, shoulder dysfunction, or a chronic back issue, targeted strength training builds the capacity of tissues to tolerate life — and sport — again.
Timing Matters
“Rehab is about slowly re-introducing previously painful exercises in a controlled manner. The right dosage, at the right time.”
“Must be right for the patient’s lifestyle: available time, preferences, etc.”
Too many rehab plans fail because they follow a cookie-cutter model. The APEX PWR physical therapy team prioritizes individualized treatment timelines. That means understanding where you are in your recovery process, what your day-to-day life looks like, and how to fit rehab into your world — not the other way around.
We believe in dosing exercise like medicine. The right movement at the wrong time can backfire. But the right progression, tailored to the individual, is what moves the needle.
Take a Step Back to Move Forward
“Rehab is about calming an injury down and then building tolerance back up.”
“Once pain is reduced we can begin to load tissues and tendons to build load tolerance and the specific strength needed to perform each individual’s activity.”
Pain is not the enemy — it’s a signal. And when we respect that signal, we can begin to strategically reintroduce load. Our team at APEX PWR focuses on calming symptoms, yes — but more importantly, on restoring confidence, function, and capacity.
We’ve worked with everyone from post-op patients to elite athletes, and one thing is consistent: smart loading is what builds lasting durability. This means using data when necessary (like our DEXA Scans), tracking progress over time, and making changes that stick.
Rehab Is Complex — And That’s Okay
“Too many clinicians try and make rehab simple. They sell gimmicky solutions and complicated exercises that claim to cure problems.”
“No, there are no magic exercises. Your pain is not due to your weak glutes. Your spine is not out of alignment.”
The truth is, rehab isn’t always linear. It requires trust, collaboration, and sometimes trial and error. What works for one person may not work for another — and that’s why we stay rooted in evidence-based practice, not online fads.
We don’t sell miracle stretches. We don’t promise quick fixes. Instead, we deliver long-term solutions that actually work, through progressive loading, tissue tolerance, movement re-education, and individualized care.
